That is the question we hear every day at ComponentOne. Instead of speculating about it, we decided to sit down and try it. Today we will discuss the process and tools we used when doing so. The approach we took was to use the MVVM pattern (from Silverlight) when developing the HTML5/JavaScript version. By choosing this method we were able to port our data access and UI layers quite easily. We take advantage of tools like KnockoutJS and Wijmo to make the process even easier. Our developers were able to minimize the cost of learning new paradigms in this migration by reusing most of their knowledge. What we ended up with was nearly identical applications in Silverlight and HTML5. Come learn how you can smoothly transition to HTML5!

Video

You can also watch it on Channel 9.

Slides

Live Demos & Source Code

You can get the code the the basic samples on GitHub. https://github.com/banzor/Knockout-Wijmo-Samples

GeoDashboard

An interactive geographic dashboard for analyzing demographic data.

Live Demo: HTML5 Version | Silverlight Version

Source Code: HTML5 Project | Silverlight Project

InvExplorer

Implements a stock browser application similar to Google Finance.

Live Demo: HTML5 Version | Silverlight Version

Source Code: HTML5 Project | Silverlight Project

Tutorial: A Stock Portfolio Application Using KnockoutJS

MVVM Dashboard

Sales dashboard built with Wijmo and Knockout.

Live Demo: HTML5 Version

Other Resources

Wijmo MVVM Support

Download Wijmo

Knockout

aspConf

I hope this article will help you make a smooth transition to HTML5. Meet Uffe Björklund and Magnus Thor, the master minds behind a new WebSockets library called XSockets. They are really passionate about building real-time web applications and have turned their passion into tools and samples for the community. Their WebSockets library is for .NET applications and has HTML5 shims for browsers that do not yet support WebSockets. These guys are doing things in Web development that is what the future of the Web will be: real-time. Not to mention the insanely cool stuff they are doing with the Kinect.

Uffe was looking for a UI tool that would compliment the XSockets streaming API. He needed something in JavaScript that could respond to live changes in data as they happened in real-time from the server. Needless to say, he found Wijmo. Since then he and Magnus have built some of the coolest apps I have ever seen with Wijmo. Here are some of the amazing things they are doing with WebSockets and Wijmo.

XSockets.Net and Wijmo in a realtime voting webbapp

A short demo (built on xsockets.net and wijmo) showing a simple voting webbapp in realtime.

XSockets Wijmo Powershell CPU Load

A realtime CPU-monitor on xsockets and wijmo… With powershell as datasupplier.

Realtime voting by voice recognition with Kinect/XSockets/Wijmo

A realtime voice voting webapplication with kinect, xsockets and wijmo.
With just a few lines of extra code you can send your voice recognition over the web with websocket thanks to XSockets.net

jQueryMobile MVC3 XSockets & Wijmo

A Demo on a JQueryMobile Application built on Cornerstone T363 course. When we wanted to completely rebuild our ASP.NET tools, we looked to jQuery UI as our client-side framework. So now that we have Wijmo, it’s time to show you how to use it in ASP.NET MVC!
Last week I had the pleasure of presenting a session at MVCConf. The session I gave was called “Putting the V in MVC”. Here is the abstract taken from the schedule:

MVC gives us total control over markup in ASP.NET. Or in other words, you better learn how to turn HTML into something pretty. Luckily, there is a great framework to help us out: jQuery UI! We will take a look at using jQuery UI to do exactly that. We will start with simple HTML markup and transform it into interactive widgets with very little code. jQuery UI widgets add style and behavior to otherwise drab markup without changing its semantics. We will also look at Wijmo, a new toolkit that extends jQuery UI. Wijmo brings over 30 widgets to jQuery UI from Menus to SVG Charts, 18 of which are Open Source. Both jQuery UI and Wijmo can take your Views from boring to brilliant in ASP.NET MVC. After this session you will be ready to start putting the V in MVC!

The Ultimate View

The gist of the session was to propose a new way of creating rich UI in MVC (The Ultimate View). The idea is to use simple HTML markup and then enhance it with jQuery UI and Wijmo. Some benefits from this approach are:

Take control over your markup

Clean & lean HTML

Maintainable markup

Highly interactive UI

Easily integrates jQuery.ajax()

Themeroller support

Video

Slides

Putting the V in MVC

View more presentations from Chris Bannon

Code

Download the sample app to follow along. It is an ASP.NET MVC 3 web app using the Razor View Engine. You will see how simple it is to use Wijmo in MVC and how clean the Views are when doing so.

Props

MVCConf blew me away! It was a huge success (over 10,000 attendees) and completely run by the community. I have to thank everyone who made it possible. I would also like to thanks MVCConf for letting me give a session. So a big round of applause for:

Javier Lozano

Jon Galloway

Eric Hexter

If you are interested in learning about how successful the online conference was check out the wrap up blog.

Webcast: Building UI with jQuery and Wijmo

Sample

Video

jQuery

jQueryUI

themeroller

Webcast

Wijmo

Wijmo-Complete

Wijmo-Open

We just finished up a Webcast on Wijmo!
